This isn’t a before/after picture. This isn’t promoting going to a weight loss group to lose weight to have a happy life. It’s a fiery refusal to wait to be ‘thin enough’ to start enjoying life.

Off the Scales is a new gig theatre show by Kate McStraw and a team of carefully selected performance makers. Inspired by Kate’s lived experience, it’s part autobiography, part examination of weight loss culture. The show follows the journey of a main character as she unpacks a lifetime of vicious conditioning and stigmatisation (aka bullsh!t) and starts to reconnect with herself.

It’s about the trials, tribulations, and tragically hilarious contradictions of trying to love yourself in a society that’s dominated by constant commentary on our bodies. Just like life, Off the Scales is full of surprises and unsolicited interruptions. Expect energy switches from cosy musical to feminist rage, with a healthy dollop of calling out systemic weight discrimination.
